Every time October rolls around, Halloween costume shops get ready for some of the busiest weeks of the year. If you’re like me, choosing the right costume is a difficult decision to make.
This year, I decided to change that and make choosing a Halloween costume easier. So I sat down last week and created an interactive Halloween costume quiz! It should help me (and hopefully you as well) decide what to dress up as, in a couple of minutes.
Below, I’ve outlined the 5 quick steps to create the quiz. If you own an online shop and want to make choosing the right laptop, washing machine, mattress, insurance or other products and services easier for your visitors, then this is a good way to go.

5 Steps to Your Interactive Product Advisor or Quiz
At first sight, creating a product advisor may seem like a sophisticated project that requires plenty of resources – manpower, time and money. Well… not quite.
I used SMARTASSISTANT’s Guided Selling solution to setup and design the advisor that you’ve hopefully tried out by now. You don’t have to code anything as it has an easy to use interface in which you can create questions and answers and drag them around to arrange the flow. There are also several design templates to choose from to adapt your advisors and make them more unique. In total it took me only 5 days from start to finish.
How did it work? Here are the 5 steps you need to follow:
1. Define your concept
In this step, it’s all about the user. Think about how they usually decide on which costume to pick. What are the questions they ask themselves? I did a bit of research on blogs and in my circle of friends to come up with the right questions to ask.
Tip: Create a set of questions that are easy to answer, and that have an impact on the user’s choice. The more personal the flow, the more entertaining the experience. Ask about the user’s likes, habits and preferences. Be personal and avoid technical gobbledygook.

2. Define the products
I started by thinking which costumes I wanted to feature in the advisor and listed them in a spreadsheet. A previous article about how to run a guided selling project successfully, stresses how important sound product information is for any effective product advisor. So I went ahead and added several attributes such as personality, style, complexity, etc. to characterize and describe each costume in the list.
Tip: If you already display comprehensive product features on your website (which most online shops do), you don’t have to create the spreadsheet manually, but can simply import your product data via CSV or a webservice.
3. Set up the advisor
The SMARTASSISTANT backend is very intuitive and doesn’t require any programming skills. You do have to spend a bit time to understand where to find certain functions and options, but once you’ve figured that out, it’s super easy. Connect the datasheet, create questions and answers, upload pictures for answer options, define rules, and rearrange the flow via drag and drop – it was fun to create this advisor using the platform, because you can immediately preview and see how it will look like in the end.
Tip: Test different paths to make sure that your rules are meaningful and trigger the right attributes. For example, if the user selects costumes for women, the result should not display costumes that are intended for men.
4. Customize the design
Now it was all about creativity. I had an idea how the advisor should look like and chose one of many available templates as a starting point. You can play around with colors and fonts and the best thing is, you don’t need any programming skills to customize your advisor.
Tip: If you have basic knowledge of Javacript, CSS or HTML, you have even more opportunities to let creativity take over.
5. Integrate your advisor on a website
